«تبحث المجتمعات دوماً عن بدائل تمكّنها من توسيع إمكانات فعلها الحضاري. وفي عملية البحث هذه، ينشأ التفاعل الثقافي بين الحضارات، وتتلاقح الأفكار، وتُنتَج بدائلُ معرفيّة وثقافيّة تحرّك سواكن الجماهير. هذه البدائل هي المثل التي تسير عليها الشعوب من أجل تحقيق مستقبل أفضل لها. لكنّ الفروق في التّجارب الحضارية للشعوب، تكمن في مدى قدرتها على استيعاب التجارب الأخرى وهضم مقولاتها وإنتاج البدائل المحلّية القادرة على التلاؤم مع المطالب الخصوصية لشعب من الشعوب.
لقد كان العرب تاريخياً من أكثر الشعوب التي استطاعت أن تتفاعل مع الثقافات العالمية، بحثاً عن ذلك الهدف الأسمى، وهو التقدّم. وربّما كان القرن العشرون من أكثر القرون التي وقعت فيها عمليات التلاقح بين العرب والغرب. ولكنّ ما ميّز عمليات «النقل» للأفكار، هو فشلها في إنتاج مجتمع عربي عصري وحداثي، وفشلها في إكساب المجتمع العربي مقوّمات المجتمع المتقدّم. لذلك ما زال المفكّرون من مشرق الوطن العربي ومغربه يعيدون طرح ذلك السؤال الجوهري الذي طرحته النخبة الفكرية العربية منذ منتصف القرن التاسع عشر، وهو كيف ننهض؟ وكيف نتقدّم؟».
الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يرصد فيه المؤلّف هذه القضايا كلّها من خلال الإسهامات الفكرية والنقدية للمفكر العربي الراحل ياسين حافظ (1930 - 1978)، الذي ترك آثاراً قيّمة ما زالت موضوع متابعة في الحياة الثقافية العربية.
