في هذا الكتاب نصوص في النحو العربي لنحاة عاشوا فيما بين القرنين السادس والثامن للهجرة، كما وفيه نصوص للأشموني الذي ولد سنة 838هـ، وتوفي سنة 929هـ على قول أو في حدود سنة 900هـ على قول آخر.
والغرض من هذا الكتاب إطلاع القارئ العربي على حقبة متأخرة من التأليف النحوي، ونذكر فيما يلي المصادر التي تم اختيار النصوص منها: المفصل للزمخشري، شرح ابن يعيش، البيان في غريب إعراب القرآن، الإنصاف في مسائل الخلاف بين النحويين البصريين والكوفيين، أسرار العربية لأبي البركان بن الأنباري، الكافية لابن الحاجب، شرح الرضي الاستراباذي، الشافية لابن الحاجب مع شرح الرضي أيضاً، الألفية لابن مالك، شرح أبي حيان الأندلسي، شرح ابن هشام، شرح ابن عقيل، ولأن شرح الأشموني من أكثر شروح الألفية تفصيلاً وأوسعها شهرة أضاف المؤلف إلى الشروح الثلاثة المذكورة، وإن كان الأشموني قد توفي في أوائل القرن العاشر. وبعد الفراغ من نصوص الألفية وشروحها عاد المؤلف إلى ابن هشام وقدم نصوصاً من كتابه المشهور: مغنى اللبيب عن كتب الأعاريب.
