عرف قانون النقد والتسليف في (المادة 121) المصرف بأنه المؤسسة التي موضوعها الأساسي أن تستعمل لحاسبها الخاص، في عمليات تسليف الأموال التي تتلقاها من الجمهور. إن هذا التعريف يمكن اعتباره خاصاً بالمصارف التجارية التي تقوم على مبدأ تلقى ودائع الجمهور، ومقابل ذلك تقدم تسليفات وقروض للمؤسسات والأفراد، إضافة إلى الخدمات المصرفية. إلا أن السوق المالي في لبنان والذي يشكل القطاع المصرفي الجزء الأهم والأكبر منه، يتكون من ثلاثة أنواع من المصارف، المصارف التجارية، المصارف المتخصصة، مصرف لبنان. وبالرغم من أهمية أنواع المصارف الثلاثة إلا أن موضوع هذا الكتاب ينحصر حول العمليات والخدمات في المصارف التجارية فقط والإثبات المحاسبي اللازم لها. وللإحاطة بجميع جوانب الموضوع قسم الكتاب على ثلاثة أقسام رئيسية، القسم الأول يعرض لأعمال المصارف في الفرع بدءاً من العمليات النقدية (سحوبات، إبداعات...) وتداول وعرض الصكوك الشخصية والمصرفية كما يعرض لأعمال الإدارات المركزية من العمليات (مقاصة وتحاويل داخلية...) إلى الكفالات والاعتمادات المستندية وعمليات القطع وتوظيف الأموال وكافة عمليات التسليف. أما القسم الثاني فيتعرض لتصنيف العمليات المصرفية، في حين يتناول القسم الثالث الإثبات المحاسبي لكل عملية مصرفية على حدة، وذلك بالاعتماد على نوع العملية وتصنيفها تبعاً للتصميم المحاسبي العام.
