هذا المعجم هو من أوائل المعاجم العربية التي خصصت لمرحلة تعليمية محددة، وهي مرحل التعليم الأساسي، وهو بشكل عام تكملة لمعجم الطالب في المرحلة الابتدائية، وتمهيد للمعاجم الأخرى، أي أنه حلقة الوصل بين الاثنين. وهو يحتوي على شرح مفصل للعديد من المفردات المستعملة باللغة العربية والتي يحتاج الطالب إلى معرفة شرحها أثناء مرحلة دراسته. وبالرجوع إلى منهج المُعجم نجد أنه يتجلى بـ: أولاً: رتّب كلمات العجم وفقاً للترتيب الأبجدي المعتمد في اللغة العربية، معتمداً على أوائل الكلمات. ثانياً: سار فيه على الجذر، لأن الطالب يحسب اعتقاد المعجم قد صار في هذه المرحلة الدراسية قادراً على البحث عن معنى الكلمة بهذه الطريقة. ثالثاً: ألحق كل شرح للمفردة بجملة مركبة أو أكثر، وذلك ليوضح للطالب المغزى الأساسي في الكلمة المستعملة. رابعاً: أهمل أسماء الأعلام إلا قلة قليلة من شعراء وكتّاب، وأسماء البلدان والمدن كي لا يخرج المعجم عمّا رُسم له، وعن الهدف الذي وضع له. خامساً: أهمل الألفاظ العامية أياً كانت. سادساً: أثبت عدداً من الألفاظ الأجنبية التي ليس لها مرادف في العربية. وقد زاد من المادة المعجمية ما يمكن تسميته "روافد إضافية" تمثلت بتكرار عدد من الألفاظ كانت قد سبقت بألفاظ أخرى، وقد قصد المُعجم بإثباتها، أي تكرار اللفظ ليعود الطالب ويقرأ المعنى الأول فيجد الفائدة في الترادف والقراءة الثانية للفظ ويضاف إلى ما تقدّم إثبات المعجم لعدد من الجمل المختارة في أسفل الصفحة لزيادة ثروة الطالب من الجمل التي تعينه في التعبير، وقد قصد أن يكون الاختيار من القرآن الكريم، أو الحديث النبوي الشريف، أو الشعر العربي، أو أمثال العرب، أو من بلاغة الأدباء والكتّاب، وكانت كلّ جملة تصبّ في الجذر الذي أمام الطالب في الصفحة نفسها، وذلك لتتشكل عند الطالب مجموعة طيبة من الجمل المتنوعة.
