لعبت الأسطورة، في ثورة الشعر المعاصر، دوراً هاماً وخطيراً، كجزء من التراث الإنساني، هذا التراث الذي حتمت ثورة الشعر العودة إليه برؤيا جديدة، لتوظيف الصالح منه في إضاءة التجربة الفنية المعاصرة، وبهذه العودة اكتسبت التجربة بعداً جديداً، خرجت به عن الأنماط السائدة. واكتشاف الميادين الأسطورية، شأنها في ذلك شأن الأقنعة والرموز، يبعد الشاعر عن الذاتية التي غرق فيها روحاً من الزمن بعفلٍ من الروح الرومنسي الذي حفلت به المرحلة الشعرية السابقة، منتقلاً من الذاتية إلى الموضوعية خلال الرمز الأسطوري أو القناع الأسطوري، فأضحى الشاعر المعاصر قادراً على الإيحاء والتعبير بالصورة، وذلك من أهم الملامح في اللغة الشاعرة، وأصبح هذا الوعي بهذا الملمح ضرورياً في الأداء الشعري. بالإضافة إلى الموضوعية، ترفد الأسطورة الشاعر المعاصر، عبد القناع أو الرمز، ببعد إضافي مواز للسطح، وبهذا العمق ينفتح للشاعر جيب سحري يهرع إليه، متوسلاً ما لا ينقال، على حد تعبير الصوفي، إما لعجز اللغة عن الوصول إلى مشارف الأصقاع النتائية في أغوار النفس البشرية، وإما خوفاً من المؤسسات المناوئة، هذه التي تتمتع بقدرات تفوق قدرات الشاعر، ولا طاقة له بمواجهتها. لهذا وذاك من الأسباب انكبّ الشاعر العربي المعاصر على الأساطير، متوسعاً في استخدامها، ملتمساً لها مصادر متعددة، في الشرق والغرب، موفقاً حيناً، ومخفقاً حيناً آخر، مبتكراً أو مقلداً، وكثرت الأساطير في الشعر العربي المعاصر، كثرة استأهلت التوقف عندها، لتجليتها من ناحية، وتمييز الصالح من الطالح منها من ناحية أخرى.
فكانت هذه الدراسة التي تناولت الأسطورة المحورية في الشعر العربي المعاصر. انتظمت تلك الدراسة ضمن فصول ستة، دارت حول المواضيع التالية: الرؤية والمصطلح، منظومة الكون في شعرنا المعاصر، موتيفة الخصب والجدب، محورية للأسطورة لدى شاعر واحد، سندباد عبد الصبور، محورية للأسطورة لدى شعراء العصر.
