يستقبل الكربلائيون في كل عام مأساة كربلاء بعيون باكية وقلوب راجفة، ووجوه مكتئبة، فهم يقيمون المآتم طيلة شهر محرم الحرام لا سيما في أيام العشرة الأولى منه، حداداً على الإمام الحسين عليه السلام وأهل بيته، فيرتدي الشيوخ والشباب والأطفال والنساء الملابس السوداء، كما تعلق اللافتات السوداء على واجهات المنازل والأماكن التي تقام فيها المجالس الحسينية وواجهات المحلات، كذلك تهيئ الأطعمة والأشربة لتوزيعها على الفقراء والمعوزين، وتخرج المواكب على اختلاف أنواعها صباحاً ومساءً، ويطلم الرجال والنساء والشباب وينوحون ويبكون، ومما يشار إليه في هذا الصدد أن زيّ الرأس ومنه العقال يرفع في اليوم العاشر، ويسير الناس مكشوفي الرأس، حفاة الأقدام، النساء يمشين حافيات الأقدام.
أمام هذا المشهد يقف الكثيرون مندهشون مما يرونه أمامهم من تقاليد وأعراف لا يعرفها الكثير من الناس اليوم إلا بعض أبناء هذه المدينة الذين عاصروا آداء تلك الشعائر. وهذا ما دعا "سليمان هادي آل طعمة" إلى وضع كتابه الذي بين أيدينا والذي يتحدث فيه عن جميع الموروثات والشعائر والصور النادرة للممارسات التي كان يؤديها الأهليون في تلك الفاجعة، كما ضمنه نبذات مختصرة تحدث فيها عن ذكريات الأئمة المعصومين (مواليدهم ووفياتهم) وكل المناسبات الدينية التي تمر على الكربلائيين خلال السنة.
