إن سورية كيان حديث وقديم في آن واحد، لقد نشأت الدولة الوطنية السورية بين نهاية القرن السابع عشر وأيامنا هذه مع انهيار الإمبراطورية العثمانية. تعتبر سورية التاريخية بنظر الأثريين والمؤرخين المتخصصين بالفترات الرومانية والهلنستية والبيزنظية فضاءً معبراً وغاية الأهمية نسبياً من الناحية التاريخية والثقافية والسياسية. فقد كانت سورية في العصر الأموي مركزاً لأرض شاسعة، تتجاوز بلاد الشام بكثير، وتقطعت المنطقة في العصور الأخرى وتفتت إلى أقاليم تتبع أقاليم محيطة.
لا شك أن الهدف الأساسي لهذا الكتاب هو ليس إعطاء تعريف لسورية الوطنية أو التاريخية، أو أن تعرض المطالب المحتملة لهذا أو ذاك من الأقاليم المفقودة، أو أيضاً التفكير بنمط للمدينة، يمكن أن يكون "المدينة السورية"، استطاع أن يحافظ عبر القرون وآلاف السنين على خصوصيات هذا الكيان. لكن من المفيد المحاولة بتعيين كل ما استمر ودام والذي بمقدوره المشاركة بتكوين هوية عمرانية في سورية. إن الأشكال الفضائية الهلنستية أو الرومانية أو أحياناً الأقدم قد تركت بعض المعالم التي ما زالت مرئية في المدن الميتة أو التي ما زالت "حية" (حلب، دمشق، اللاذقية، إنطاكية، الخ). لقد شاركت في تكوين أشكال عمرانية لاحقة كانت مراحل لتكوين مدينة الحاضر. لكن هل لهذه الأشكال حالياً معنى آخر غير أثري أو تراثي؟ ومن جهة أخرى فإن الأشكال التي تعتبر نموذجية بالنسبة للمدينة العربية أو الإسلامية فقد عرفت غالباً ضمن إطار متناقض أساسي مع الماضي اليوناني -الروماني بإزالتها لأي أثر لهذا الموروث. ففي أي مجال انطبعت بالماضي الأشكال العمرانية السورية الحديثة وتواضعها الوظيفي والعادات الاجتماعية؟ ستحصل بالتأكيد على بعض المؤشرات عن ما هو أو عن ليس هو بلاد الشام وعن هوية تقليدية للمدن في سورية.
