تحتل مدينة كربلاء موقعاً مميزاً في التاريخ العربي الإسلامي، إذ ارتبط اسمها بجملة من الأحداث الهامة والتي كان أجلها مصرع سيد الشهداء الحسين بن علي عليه السلام، إذ تتشرف هذه المدينة برفات سيد الشهداء، وللمدينة مكانة دينية تميزت بها على مدى التاريخ الإسلامي وهي مدينة عربية خالصة سكنها السيد إبراهيم المجاب بن محمد العابد بن الإمام موسى الكاظم سنة 247هـ، وأخذ العلويون وغيرهم بالتوافد عليها، فيما بعد حتى ازدهرت في عهد البويهيين إبان القرن الرابع الهجري، واستوطنها في أوائل القرن الخامس الهجري أبو محرر عبد الله الحائري، وهي ليومها هذا مدينة عامرة تحظى بالمكانة الرفيعة وتهفو إليها قلوب الناس.
وفي هذا الكتاب الذي يقع في جزءين يتصدى المؤلف للكتابة عن العشائر والأسر التي قطنتها قديماً وحديثاً وخاصة تلك التي مر على سكنها في المدينة أكثر من مئة عام وقد بذل المؤلف جهداً في تتبع مادته في بطون الكتاب وخزائن البيوتات العريقة في المدينة. ولم يخرج عن القواعد والضوابط المتبعة في تدوين الأنساب.
وقد خصص المؤلف الجزء الأول للعلويين بينما أوقف الجزء الثاني على ذكر الأسس غير العلوية وأضاف في آخر الكتاب فهرساً بالأسر والعشائر والأماكن حسب حروف المعجم، وأرفق بها صوراً لبعض شيوخ العشائر والأعلام البارزين بحسب توافرها لديه.
