ورثت الدولة البيزنطية ارثين حضاريين كبيرين من الرومان واليونان ومع ما تكتنزه هذه الدولة من تراث حضاري هائل كان لها علاقات وشيجة مع العرب الذين كان لموقعهم الجغرافي عاملاً هاماً في انفتاح الأمم المجاورة عليهم. فقامت بينهم وبين تلك الأمم علاقات تجارية ودينية وعلمية وفنية، ومع أن الحرب في أحيان كثيرة كانت هي العامل الرئيسي في هذه الاتصالات إلا أن عوامل أخرى قد لعبت دوراً لا تقل أهمية عن ذلك.
والباحث الدكتور إيلي مخائيل قطرميز وهو يعرض في دراسته تلك لأثر التفاعل الحضاري بين البيزنطيين والعربي في الأدب العربي إنما يركز على العلاقات التي سادت بين العرب قبل الإسلام والبيزنطيين وبين العربي في دولتهم الكبيرة عندما واجهوا أكبر قوة في قارتي آسيا وأوروبا. والدور الذي لعبته الدولة البيزنطية في حضارة المنطقة لا يمكن إغفالها أو المرور عليه بإيجاز فكان لا بد من التمهيد لتاريخ الأمم المجاورة لفهم تاريخ العرب.
كما عرض في الباب الأول لعوامل الاتصال والتأثير بين العرب والروم، فعرف بالعرب وطبقاتهم وهجراتهم ودويلاتهم ودياناتهم. كما يبحث في تاريخ العلاقات منذ بواكير الصلات بين الطرفين. كما يبحث أثر التفاعل الحضاري بين البيزنطيين والعربي في الألفاظ ويحاول أن يبرز وجوه واقتباس كل لغة من الأخرى مجموعة من الألفاظ والاصطلاحات والألقاب قبل أن يناقش المؤثرات البيزنطية واليونانية في الأدب العربي.
كما يبحث المؤلف أثر التفاعل الحضاري بين البيزنطيين والعرب في الرسائل والعهود حيث يذهب إلى أن العلاقة بين شعبين وإن اتخذت شكلاً عدائياً، لا يمكن أن تفهم من وجهة نظر التاريخ وحده، إذ لا يمكن إغفال حساسيات الطوائف الشعبية التي عاشت ظروف هذه الفترة في أعماقها.
