في كتابه هذا يتحدث الدكتور صلاح محمد أبو الحاج عن "إمام الأئمة الفقهاء أبو حنيفة النعمان" وإسمه النعمان بن ثابت بن النعمان بن المزربان بن زوطا، يبين المؤلف حال الإمام أبا حنيفة النعمان رضي الله عنه من العلم والفقه والحديث والتقوى والورع، ويذكر كل علماء مذهبه الذين صنفوا كتبه ومن جميع المذاهب الأخرى من المالكية والشافعية والحنابلة بالإضافة إلى علماء مذهبه من الحنيفية، أما الغاية من تأليف الكتاب فيوضحها المؤلف "... لما رأيت سوء الظن من بعضهم؛ لجهله بالفقه ومعناه وتسلسله التاريخي وكيفيبة استخراج مسائله والإستدلال لها مما جعلهم يقعون في فقهائنا، عزمت على جمع كتاب يبيّن حقيقة الأمر، ويرفع اللثام عن الفقه وطريقة انتقاله للإمام الأعظم، ويكشف الستار عن مستند الإمام أبي حنيفة رضي الله عنه فيما ذهب إليه، ويدفع الترهات التي علقت في أذهان بعضهم من قبل الأقران والمتعصبين والحاسدين، فحققت في الفصل الأول مكانة مدرسة الكوفة الفقهية مما كان مسلماً عند سلفنا، وفصّلت في الفصل الثاني في طبقة الإمام أبي حنيفة، وبيّنت في الفصل الثالث توثيق العلماء المنصفين له".
