نقطة البدء فى هذا الكتاب- الذى صدرت طبعته الأولى فى يناير 1968 - محاولة الانفلات من أسر المسائل الجزئية والأحكام التفصيلية والخلافات التطبيقية التى يحتشد بها التراث النحوى فى العربية، والانطلاق نحو أفق أرحب من إلقاء نظرة كلية وشاملة تستكشف الظواهر المفصلة الحاكمة للبناء اللغوى والتحليل النحوى معاً، وهى أول محاولة فى هذا المجال تحدد بشكل موضوعى أبرز هذه الظواهر فتضيف غلى ما كان معروفا فى النحو العربى من الاعتداد بظاهرة التصرف الإعرابى، عدداً من الظاهر الأخرى التى لا تقل تاثيرا فى العربية لغة ونحوا كان فى طليعتها ظاهرة التطابق وهى ظاهرة تمتد إلى جبهتين واستعتين هما: التاطبق العددى إفراداُ وتثنية وجمعاً والتطابق النوعى تذكيرا وتأنيثاً، ثم ظاهرى الترتيب التى تحدد بشكل دقيق مواقع الكلمات فى الجملة. ولقد كانت هذه الإضافات هى المدخل الكبير الذى انطلق منه الباحثون من بعد فأخذوا منه وأضافوا حتى إن منهم الآن من اصبح معروفاً به.
