مهنة المحاماة من أقدم المهن وأنبلها، إذ يتصدى المحامون للدفاع عن المتهمين وتبيان حقيقة مواقفهم مما ينسب إليهم من تهم وأفعال يكونون هم غير قادرين على إقامة الحجة والبرهان عليها، وهم يفعلون ذلك بهدف إحقاق الحق ودفع الظلم عن الناس وغايتهم تحقيق العدالة. وقد مرت مهنة المحاماة بمراحل عديدة تطورت خلالها حتى وصلت إلى ما هي عليه. وأصبحت مهنة محكومة بضوابط وقواعد ينبغي العمل وفقاً لها.
وقد كانت دول العالم المتقدم السباقة إلى وضع قوانين تنظيم مهنة المحاماة في العصر الحالي. كما صدرت مثل هذه القوانين التنظيمية في الدول العربية. أما في لبنان فقد صدر أول قانون تنظيمي في 6 شباط 1919، قضى بعدم جواز ممارسة مهنة المحاماة إلا بعد الحصول على إذن من الحاكم العام. وكنتيجة لهذا القانون فرض التدرج القانوني على الراغبين في ممارسة المهنة بالإضافة إلى حصولهم على الشهادة الحقوقية.
وفي هذا الكتاب يضع أحد الخبراء في القانون أبرز الاجتهادات والآراء الحقوقية التي تدور حول عملية تنظيم مهنة المحاماة خصوصاً فيما يتعلق بأتعاب المحامين والأذن بملاحقته واعتزال المحامي للوكالة، ومخاصمة المحامي وحرية ممارسة المحاماة، ومسؤولية المحامي وقوانين مهنة المحاماة. كما ارفق المؤلف بالكتاب بعض الملاحق التي تضمن قوانين تنظيم مهنة المحاماة في عدد من الدول والكتاب خير معين لمن يريد الإلمام بكل ما يتعلق بممارسة هذه المهنة.
