يدور موضوع الكتاب حول مفهوم العدل الإلهي والمسائل المتعلقة به، مؤلف الكتاب السيد الشهيد مرتضى مطهري، نقله إلى العربية محمد عبد المنعم الخاقاني، جمع فيه محاضرات كان ألقاها المؤلف في المؤسسة الإسلامية الشهيرة "حسينية الإرشاد" ، وفيها مجموع إجابات للمؤلف عن مسائل طُرحت عليه من قبل كثير من فئات المسلمين، ولا سيما الشباب، بالإضافة إلى بحوث مختلفة منها نقلية وأخرى عقلية، تعتمد الأولى على آيات القرآن الكريم والروايات المأثورة عن الرسول وآله وبيته والأئمة الأطهار صلوات الله وسلامه عليهم أجمعين، بينما تعتمد الثانية على الناحية العقلية، حيث تناول فيها المؤلف الطريقة الكلامية، والطريقة الفلسفية، مع إعطاء الأولوية لطريقة "إستدلال الحكماء" ، لذلك أعرض كما يقول عن طريقة المتكلمين وأحياناً طريقة أهل الحديث عندما يكون لذلك ضرورة، وعلى هذا كتب السيد مطهري في موضوع (العدل الإلهي) بأسلوب الحكماء، فبرأيه "الفعل المتصف بالحكمة هو الذي لا يفتقد الغرض حتى على المستوى النسبي، وبعبارة أوضح هو الفعل الذي يمتلك غرضاً معقولاً بالإضافة إلى أنه قد اختير حسب مقياس الأصلح والأرجح".
