لم يكن الأصمعي غريباً عن الدارسين، أو إسماً معموراً تناسته الأيام، فهو وأحد من كبار علماء العربية في القرن الثاني للهجرة، ممن أضافوا لتراثنا اللغوي والأدبي رصيداً ضخماً. وعلى الرغم من أن عوادي الزمن قد آنت على بعض مؤلفاته، إلا أنّ كتبه وجهوده في الرواية الأدبية ما زالت على منزلة رفيعة من المكانة العلمية أو القيمة الجليلة، لا يمكن لأي باحث أن يتجاهلها.
ولعل الدافع لاختيار هذا البحث هو قصور دراساتنا الحديثة عن إيفاء هذا الرجل حقه وبيان دوره في رواية الشعر العربي. وربما كان ذلك راجعاً إلى طبيعة مناهجها.
وقد حاولت تحقيق أمرين في هذا البحث. الأول، تتبع آراء الأصمعي وأقواله وشروحه ورصد ما قام حول هذا الشعر من نظرات نقدية (الآراء التي اختلفت مع الأصمعي)، والثاني: الكشف عن منهج الأصمعي في الرواية والشرح والنقد وتقويم عمله من خلال تلك الآراء والأقوال.
يتألف هذا البحص من مقدمة وأربعة فصول:
الفصل الأول: في شخصية الأصمعي، تعريف بسلسلة نسبه ولقبه، أسرته ومولده، إلتزامه الديني، أخلاقه، تعصبه، شهرته.
الفصل الثاني: في دراسة جهوده في الرواية.
الفصل الثالث: في جهود الأصمعي في شرح الأشعار الجاهلية.
الفصل الرابع: في دراسة جهوده في النقد والتقويم.
