"أحس الحمار بطمأنينة كبيرة بعد حديثه مع الموظف الأميركي ولأنه كان قد بذل جهداً غير عادي عندما قفز من فوق السور إلى داخل الحديقة، تمدد الحمار على الأرض وتمطع وأخذ راحته على الآخر، وكأنه كان يرقد في "بيت أبوه"... اقترب الموظف بهدوء وحيا الحمار ثانية، فوثب الأخير من رقدته المريحة، وبادر الموظف دون أن يرد تحيته: الحمار: بشّر؟ الموظف: سعادة السفير يريد أن يتحدث معك... الحمار: يا حبيبي أنا لا أصدق ذلك، ثم إنني أرفض طلب سفيركم هذا، الموظف: ترفض طلب السفير..! لماذا؟ الحمار: يا حبيبي أنا لم أتعود لقاء السفراء والشخصيات المهمة في بلادنا التعبانة هذه، فكيف وسعادة السفير الأميركي يود أن يتحدث معي؟ الموظف: صدقني المسألة أسهل كثيراً مما تتصور. سعادة السفير رجل جنتلمان ومتواضع... وبالعامية بحبوح ويحب الحيوانات، حاله حال كل الأميركيين. الحمار: أنا أعرف أن الأميركان يحبون الحيوانات لكن، سعادة السفير بنفسه يقتطع جزءاً من وقته الثمني ليقرر مصير حمار؟ الموظف: وهل مصير الحمار عندكم شيء بسيط؟ الحمار: لا... الشهادة لله إن مصير الإنسان عندنا هو البسيط".
يضيف "أنس زاهد" في كل عمل روائي جديد نكهة الحبكة المفاجئة والتركيب المتين للبنية السردية. يشوقنا إلى القراءة والمتابعة بلا ملل، فالرواية في تسلسلها الذكي وتقاطع أحداثها الجذاب والمرن، مع الاحتفاظ بهدوء النبرة، وتشدنا إلى آخر حرف منها. في متانة يحوك "زاهد" روايته الجديدة "حمار في المنفى" التي يسخر فيها من حال المواطن العربي، هذا الأخير الذي أحسّ بغربته وهو في وطنه، فطلب الرحيل واللجوء إلى الخارج إلى أرض الأحلام التي ربما شعر فيها بالحرية والحياة ولكن النهاية لن تكون كما يحسبها هو بل كما يكتبها له الآخرون أهل البلاد. فهل يطلب العودة؟ أم يهرب إلى غير رجعة؟
