إذا كان الحس المأساوي بالحياة هو جوهر التعبير الدرامي عموماً، والمأساة بصفة خاصة، وكان العمل المسرحي العظيم –حتى في نهاية صيغته الكوميدية نفسها- هو تعبير عن رؤية مأساوية للعالم، مستترة أو ظاهرة، فهل من الممكن الحديث عن دراما حقيقية بدون رؤية مأساوية أصيلة وحس مأساوي عميق؟ وإذا كان موضوع هذه الرؤية هو المتعالي أو العالم أو الإنسان، فهل استطاع المسرح العربي أن يعبر –مأساوياً- عن رؤية العرب والمسلمين لتاريخهم المحجوز ماضياً وحاضراً، ولذواتهم وللعالم وللمتعالي؟ هم الذين استطاعوا أن ينتجوا أهم نظرية للتاريخ في العصر الوسيط، وأصناف من الفلسفات والمعارف، ظلت تكتسي طابعاً إنسانياً حتى فجر النهضة الأوروبية. هل استطاعت الفواجع الحضارية والسياسية وانعكاساتها الوجودية والوجدانية أن تؤدي إلى إنبثاق الوعي المأساوي العميق، وبلورة صيغة تراجيدية أصيلة في المسرح العربي؟ هل استطاع المسرحيون العرب أن يتمثلوا الأعمال المأساوية المكتشفة –بواسطة الترجمة والتعريب والإقتباس والتكييف- بما تقوم عليه من أسس فلسفية وفكرية، وأن يستوعبوا خصائصها الجمالية والفنية؟ ثم ما مفهوم المسرحيين العرب للمأساة وللرؤية المأساوية، وكيف ظهرت تجليات ذلك المفهوم في أعمالهم المسرحية؟... تلك بعض من الأسئلة والهموم التي تحرك موضوع هذا الكتاب، وتسكن فكر صاحبه ووجدانه منذ سنوات عديدة، وهي في رأينا أسئلة جوهرية بالنسبة لحاضر المسرح العربي ومستقبله.
