شكّلت واقعة كربلاء حدثاً مفصلياً في التاريخ الإسلامي إبان العصر الأموي، ولم يتوقف أثرها على الجانب السياسي للخلافة الإسلامية بل أثّرت تأثيراً مباشراً في وجدان المسلمين، وحضرت بشكل متميز في أدبهم وكتاباتهم.
وهذا البحث يدرس أشكال القصيدة الكربلائية ومفاهيمها منذ بداية القرن العشرين وحتى أيامنا هذه، وذلك بعد أن قام الباحث بقراءة تاريخية في الواقعة وتطور حضورها في الذاكرة الشعبية والعقائدية لدى الناس.
ما يميز هذا الكتاب أنه جمع التاريخ إلى الأدب وطارد نصوصاً غير معروفة لبعض علماء الفقه في محاولة لبناء تأسيس متصل فحضرت في متونه أسماء كبار شعراء العربية مع أسماء تمر للمرة الأولى، وكان همه النموذج الشعري المتميز وليس الكثرة التراكمية قليلة الإبداع.
يتوزع الكتاب في أربعة فصول: درس الفصل الأول أشكال القصيدة الكربلائية، في حين كان الفصل الثاني دراسة لعدة إختيارات شعرية لشعراء مختلفين، أما الفصل الثالث فكان قراءة نقدية لعدد كبير من نصوص القصيدة العربية الحديثة التي اقتربت من الموضوعة الكربلائية وأحضرتها في النص الشعري مع مراعاة الجوانب الفنية لتلك القصيدة، وحاول الفصل الرابع تقديم إضاءة نقدية للمسرحيات الشعرية التي تناولت كربلاء مُركّزاً على جوانب الإختلاف والإضافة بعد استعراض لمجمل الواقعة التاريخية مسرحياً عبر مسرحة الحسين ثائراً، دون الوقوف على الأحداث ذاتها في المسرحيات اللاحقة التي احتواها الكتاب، بل أن الباحث جهد إلى تقصي المختلف والمؤسس في البنية المسرحية خصوصاً وأن تمثيل واقعة كربلاء – بحسب الباحث – يُعد أو أشكال الظهور المسرحي لدى العرب.
ومن شعر كربلاء نقرأ ما ساقه الباحث في قصيدة "السمفونية الجنوبية" للشاعر نزار قباني يقول فيها:
سميتك الجنوب / يا لابساً عباءة الحسين / وشمس كربلاء / يا شجرة الورد الذي يحترف البكاء / يا ثورة الأرض التقت بثورة السماء / يا جسداً يطلع من ترابه / قمح ... وأنبياء".
