يسود الاعتقاد، منذ عصر النهضة، لدى مؤرخي المسرح ومنظِّري الدراما، بأن خلود كثير من الأعمال التراجيدية العظيمة، يعود في الأساس إلى ما تمتاز به من قيمة شعرية وجمالية رفيعة. غير أن التراجيديا ليست نتاجاً فنياً خالصاً، ومن بين كل الأجناس الأدبية والصيغ الدرامية الأخرى، تظل أكثرها تفلسفاً وارتباطاً بالتاريخ وبالشرط الإنساني في الآن نفسه. ولا يعني هذا أن التراجيديا مجرد عرض لأفكار فلسفية، أو تأمل محض في صيرورة التاريخ وسننه، ففي هذا الزعم اختزال لشعريتها وأصالتها. ومع ذلك، فإن البحث في التراجيديا لا يكتمل ويستقيم إلا باستحضار مضمونها الفلسفي وعمقها الإنساني، مهما كانا كامنين مستترين.
وتظهر العلاقة بين التراجيديا والفلسفة في مستويين رئيسيين: الأول تاريخي يتمثل في تزامن ظهور الأعمال التراجيدية الأولى للشعراء الإغريق الرواد، مع ميلاد الفلسفة اليونانية؛ ثم في توازي عودة التراجيديا في القرنين السادس عشر والسابع عشر، مع تشكل الأنساق الفلسفية الكلاسيكية الكبرى. أما المستوى الثاني فهو نظري، إذ يعود تحديد مفهوم التراجيديا وجوهرها، إلى النصوص الفلسفية التأسيسية التي تقوم عليها شعرية الجنس التراجيدي. ونعني نصوص أرسطو أولاً، ثم هيغل ونيتشه وشوبنهاور وغيرهم في العصر الحديث. ذلك أن تاريخ المسرح عموماً، هو تاريخ التجربة الإنسانية وسعيها الدؤوب لاكتشاف المقولات الفلسفية وتجسيدها بواسطة اللغة الدرامية.
