يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى التعريف بأسس وأدوات الطريقة العيادية في الفحص النفساني وفي التشخيص والتنبؤ، والتعرف على الإجراءات المستخدمة في تطبيق الاختبارات. كما يهدف أيضاً إلى تبيان التحليل الكيفي لنتائج الاختبار ودلالاته النفسية بالإضافة إلى التحليل الكمي. هذا ويتناول الكتاب موضوع الذكاء والقياس العقلي على نحو منهجي مبتدئاً بمدخل عن الفروق الفردية وأهمية دراستها، ثم يعالج في الفصل الثاني موضوع الذكاء وخصائصه، مسلطاً الضوء على الإشكالية الجوهرية التي تتمحور حول الذكاء والحتمية الوراثية. وفي الفصل الثالث تعريف بالاختبارات النفسية وأنواعها، ودور الأخصائي النفساني العيادي (مجالاته، أدواته، التشخيص والتنبؤ)، ومقومات الفحص النفساني. ويتناول الفصل الرابع والخامس قياس الذكاء، مبتدئاً باختبار بينية باعتباره نقطة انطلاق اختبارات الذكاء، يليه اختبار وكسلر لذكاء الراشدين، مع توضيح الدلالات العيادية لنتائج هذه الاختبارات. أما الفصل السادس والسابع فقد عالجا اختبار رسم المنزل والشجرة والشخص لـ"باك". ويتناول الفصل الثامن فوائد القياس النفسي سواء بالنسبة لتشخيص الضعف العقلي، أو بالكشف عن الموهوبين، وأخيراً أهمية التوجيه والإرشاد النفسي.
