يمثل هذا الكتاب إضافة جديدة في مجال الآثار الإسلامية بصفة عامة، والسكة الإسلامية بصفة عامة، والسكة الإسلامية بصفة خاصة، وجاء هذا العمل تحت عنوان: "دراسة مقارنة للكتابات والزخارف على النقود والتحف المعدنية في العصر المملوكي البحري في مصر" لمؤلفه محمد عبد الودود عبد العظيم، المدرس المساعد بكلية الآثار -جامعة القاهرة- فرع الفيوم.
وجاء الكتاب في بابين، أفرد الباب الأول لدراسة الكتابات التي نقشت على كل من النقود والتحف المعدنية في العصر المملوكي البحري، وتفسير المعاني اللغوي المختلفة، وإيضاح مدلولاتها التي ساعدت بدورها في دراسة الأحداث التي كانت سبباً وراء تسجيل هذه الكتابات على نقود كل سلطان وعلى ما صنع له من تحف معدنية متنوعة، ووفقت الدراسة إلى حد كبير في تفسير المضامين التي اشتملت عليها النصوص الكتابية، ما بين كتابات تسجيلية ودعائية ودينية وتاريخية، بالإضافة إلى دراسة طرق وأماكن تسجيلها على النقود والتحف المعدنية -في الفترة موضوع الدراسة-.
واشتمل الباب الثاني على خمسة فصول أفردت لدراسة الزخارف التي نقشت على النقود ومقارنتها بما جاء على التحف المعدنية المعاصرة لها، وأوضحت الدراسة أن هذه الزخارف جاءت متنوعة ما بين زخارف كتابية نباتية وحيوانية وهندسية، ثم أفرد فصً كاملاً لدراسة الرنوك التي سجلت عليها، مع محاولة إبراز أوجه الشبه والاختلاف على كل من النقود والتحف المعدنية.
كما اعتمد الباحث على عدد ضخم من المصادر العربية الأصيلة في تاريخ دولة المماليك البحرية، واطلع أيضاً على معظم المراجع الخاصة بالنقود والفنون الإسلامية، وقد زود الكتاب بقائمة كبيرة من هذه المصادر التاريخية والمراجع العربية والأجنبية.
أيضاً ألحق بالكتاب عدد كبير لصور بعض النقود والتحف المعدنية التي تمت دراستها، وصاحبها أشكال توضيحية لنماذج من أشكال الحروف والكتابات والزخارف التي تناولتها الدراسة.
وألحق أن الباحث قد قام بدراسة ناحية مهمة من تاريخ فترة تعد من أهم فترات التاريخ المصري، تلك الحقبة التي تمثل أقصى ما بلغه الفن الإسلامي في مصر من تطور ونضوج.
