نباتات الظل هي تلك النباتات التي تستعمل تزيين البيوت والمحلات والفنادق العامة لتضيف جواً ممتعاً بها. وطريقة التزيين الداخلي هذه تعتبر فناً من فنون التنسيق التي تأثرت كثيراً بالتطور الحديث وخاصة تطور فن البناء وفن الديكور الداخلي، حيث أصبحت العلاقة وطيدة بين النوافذ وسعتها من جهة وبين تلك النباتات من جهة أخرى لتجهيزها بكمية الضوء اللازمة لحياتها، إضافة إلى أن هذه النباتات أصبح لها طابعاً خاصاً من حيث اللون والشكل والحجم وطبيعة النمو وأخذ طابعها هذا يفرض وجوده في اختيار المكان المناسب داخل البيوت واحتل الصدارة في ذلك. كما أن قواعد التنسيق العامة أخذت تنطبق عليها كالبساطة والتناسب والتوازن والتنوع والوحدة لما لهذه القواعد من أثر في تجميل داخل البيوت خاصة إذا كانت عناصر كل قاعدة منها متوافقة وغير متنافرة فتعطينا مثلاً أعلى للجمال.
عن هذه النباتات يتحدث هذا الكتاب الذي بين يدينا حيث يشرح بداية مفهوم مصطلح نباتات الظل من ثم يقدم وصفاً لعدة أجناس من هذه النباتات واصفاً إياها من ناحية الشكل من ثم متحدثاً عن البيئة التي تعيش بها كل نبتة، وطريقة ريها وتغذيتها وتكاثرها بعد ذلك يذكر اسم كل نبتة وموطنها الأصلي، وأخيراً يثبت صورة ملونة كبيرة تظهر شكل هذه النبتة...
