اشتمل القرن الرابع الهجري على أعلام بذلوا وسعهم، لإكمال جهود أسلافهم في بناء صرح الحضارة العربية التي كان نورها قد سطع منذ تراجمت النفوس، فأصبحت بنبانا مرصوصاً يشدّ بعضه بعضاً. من بين هؤلاء الأعلام وقع اختيار الباحث على محمد بن القاسم بن الأنباري، وذلك لدراسة حياته وأعماله ومؤلفاته، وهذا راجع إلى أن ابن الأنباري كان واحد عصره كما قال الأزهري، وهو من رجال الكوفيين الكبار، فهو أوعبهم بمذاهبهم، ومن أعلم الناس وأفضلهم في نحو الكوفيين. وقد قام الباحث وبالتحديد بدراسة جهود ابن الأنباري في النحو الصرف واللغة بعد الوقوف على أصوله بغاية تقديم صورة واضحة لمذهب أهل الكوفة. فجاء بحثه هذا ضمن أبواب ثلاثة: أولها حياة الرجل وآثاره ومذهبه. ثانيها: جهوده في النحو والصرف، ثالثها: جهوده في اللغة.
ابن الأنباري من كبار علماء العربية له جهود عظيمة لا تنكر فيها، ولذا فإن المؤلف رأى من حقه على الأمة أن يفرده في دراسة تشير إلى مكانته وتتناول بالدراسة أهم آثاره وتقف عند مذهبه في اللغة والنحو وآرائه المختلفة التي قدمها في ثناياهما.
