البراء السراج, دكتور في علم المناعة, جامعة نورثوسترن, شيكاغو يقول عن تجربته: طوال خمس عشرة سنة, منذ إخلاء سبيلي من سجون حافظ الأسد, الرئيس السوري السابق, قمت بعدة محاولات لكتابة مذكراتي لكن لم أستطع. كانت محاولة الكتابة أشبه بالدخول ثانية في كابوس لذا أجد نفسي بعد عدة صفحات أتوقف وأمسح ماكتبته, ليس بعد الآن. الفظائع التي ترتكبها قوات بشار الأسد, الرئيس الجمهوري الوريث, ضد المتظاهرين المسالمين في المدن والقرى السورية والتي أشاهدها كل يوم على اليوتوب وقنوات التلفزيون لم تدع لي خيارا. التنديد بهذه الفظائع, قولا وعملا, هو واجب أخلاقي وإنساني. لأخذ فكرة عن الظروف التي يعيشها السوريون تحت الحكم العسكري منذ أن جاء في 8 آذار 1963 ولتفهم مطالب الحرية التي ينادي بها السوريون, إن كانت الحرية تحتاج لتوضيح, أحب أن أعبر عن رغبة حملتها منذ سنين. كانت لي أمنية ان أرى سجن تدمر العسكري القابع في وسط الصحراء السورية قرب الآثار الرومانية الشهيرة. مع أنني دخلت ذلك السجن كسجين سياسي ضمن سجناء [عديمي] الرأي في الحادية والعشرين من عمري ومكثت فيه تسع سنين لكن ليس لدي تصور كاف عنه. كيف؟ دخلت سجن تدمر في ٦ حزيران ١٩٨٤ وخرجت منه في ٥ كانون الثاني ١٩٩٣ منقولا إلى سجن صيدنايا العسكري، لكن في كلتا الحالتين كنت مطمشا، عندما دخلت وعندما خرجت. وهذه "الطماشة" أو "الطميشة"، وهي قطعة القماش او الجلد التي توضع على العينين لمنع النظر, ستلازمني معظم سني تدمر عند الإنتقال عبر باحات السجن وأثناء النوم، نعم، أثناء النوم، لأن سقوط الطماشة وأنت نائم يعني الضرب المبرح وربما الموت، فالنوم ليس عذرا في تدمر.
