ابن رشد فيلسوفٌ ذو رأي، وصاحبُ مشروع وهدف، قد يلتقي بعض الناس معه في الرؤية، وقد يُخالفه البعضُ الآخر. وتأتي هذه الدراسة لتكشفَ عن أبعاد مشروعه من خلال آرائه وما كان لها من أثر بخاصة في الاتجاهات الفكرية الحديثة. وقد تناولتْ هذه الدراسة ـ لتبلغَ هدفها ـ الناحيةَ التاريخية، بتحليل حياة ابن رشد وتاريخه الفكريّ، وبيان علاقاته بمختلف الشخصيات في زمانه، ودراسة محنته التي مرَّ بها وأسبابها وآثارها عليه. ثم تناولت الناحيةَ الفكريةَ عنده وبخاصة تلك التي تتعلق بالمنهج الكلامي وموقفه منه، من خلال دراسته لمسائل علم الكلام، وكيفية مناقشته للمتكلمين، معلِّلةً مواقفه، محلِّلةً نظراتِه النقديةَ وأحكامَه التي انتهى إليها، مبيِّنـةً الأسبابَ التي دفعته لترجيح تلك الأحكام واتخاذ تلك المواقف، كاشفةً عن إيغال ابن رشد في نصرة المنهج الفلسفي على حساب البحث الديني.
وبيّنت الدراسة بعد ذلك بشكل وجيز تأثير ابن رشد في فلاسفة الغرب ومفكِّريه في القرون الوسطى وبواكير عصر التنوير الأوروبي، لمعرفة العلاقة التي نشأت بعدَ ذلك بينهم وبين مفكري النهضة العرب الذين أعادوا استدعاء ابن رشد وحاولوا إحياء فلسفته، فبينت أثر ابنِ رشد وفلسفتِه في أولئك المفكِّرين العرب، وبيّنت اتجاهاتهم الفكرية ومقاصدهم السياسية والاجتماعية والدينية، والعلاقة الوثيقة بينهم وبين مفكري التنوير الأوروبيـين ومدى تأثرهم بهم في كثير من الجوانب. ثم وضّحَتْ أنّ هذه المرحلة كانت الممهِّدَ الحقيقي لامتداد أثر ابن رشد إلى الفكر الحداثي العلماني المعاصر باتجاهية: الدوغمائي (التنويري)، واتجاه(ما وراء الحداثة)، وشرحَتْ كيفية اعتماد رجال ذلك الفكر على ابن رشد سواء في الأفكار والنتائج، أو فيما أسموه بالرُّوح الرُّشدية التي خلص معظمُهم إلى أنها هيَ التي تنفعهم في هذا الزمان، تاركين آراءَه التي ناضل من أجلها، معلنين بذلك تجاوزهم له من ناحية فكرية. لقد كشفت هذه الدراسة عن نتائج خطيرة ومثيرة حول ابن رشد ومنهجه الفكري، قد تكون معارضةً لما هو شائعٌ عند كثير من الناس، وقد تكون مصادمةً لما يحبُّ كثيرون ألا يروه أو يصرِّحوا به، ولكن ذلك لا يمنع من التصريح بها، وإقامة الدليل والبرهان عليها.
