كان جورج سانتيّانا شاعرًا وأديبًا ناثرًا وفيلسوفًا مخضرمًا وخليطًا مميزًا، يجمع بين أرستقراطية شعوب البحر المتوسط والفردية الأمريكية، كان روحًا طروبًا، حرًّا ومتمردًا على روح عصره، يكتب بلغة أسطورية تُشبه لغة العالم الوثني القديم، كأنه أحد الفلاسفة المشّائين يُحَدّث تلامذته عن الروح والمادة والحقيقة والوجود بينما يتمشى في اللُّوقيون [مدرسة أرسطو]. ولم تلبس الفلسفة ثوبًا جميلًا منذ عهد أفلاطون، مُرَصَّعًا بكلماتٍ جزلة وعبارات مطعّمةً بالحكمة، ومنسوجة بنعومة يشفّ عنها الذكاء، ويُحصنها النقد اللاذع والعقل الفطن، كما لبسته في «عهد الشاعر» سانتيّانا الذي فتح أبواب السماء «ليجلب الجمال إلى الأرض». ولذلك من الصعب جدًّا أن لا تعشق أسلوب سانتَيانا عندما تقرأ له، فلغته الأنيقة وتعبيراته الشعرية وأفكاره المختلفة وآراؤه المفعمة بالصدق وقلمه اللاذع الذي لا يتوانى عن نقد حتى أكثر العقول توافقًا معه، إذا ما لم تقنعه فكرة – هذا كله يجبرك على احترام هذا العقل المميز الذي طالما اعتبر نفسه ماديًّا بتطرف. غير أن ماديته تعني العودة إلى الطبيعة.هذا الكتاب الذي نقدمه بين أيديكم اليوم يعتبر خلاصة فكر سانتيانا حول الموضوعات الأبرز في فلسفته: المعرفة الإنسانية، نظرته إلى المادة والوجود، العقل في العلم الذي أخذ جزء مهمًّا من كتابه «حياة العقل The life of Reason»، والروح والموت. ألقيت هذه المحاضرات في مناسبات عدة وجمعت ونشرت في هذا الكتاب عام 1933.
