تعاني المكتبة العربية من فراغ في الدراسات المتخصصة بجوانب فلسفة أفلاطون، وتحديداً نظرية المثل "لأن اسم أفلاطون يبعث في الذهن على الفور نظرية المثل، ولأنها القاعدة التي بنى عليها أفلاطون كل فلسفته، والتي أثرت في مجمل أشكال الفلسفة المثالية، وأكملت موضوع بحثنا هذا بإضافة نقد أرسطو لنظرية المثل، كي نضع صورة واضحة أمام القارئ، مما عرضه أفلاطون نفسه ومن نقد فيلسوف كبير مزامن له ومتتلمذ عليه كأرسطو.
لذا أخذنا هذين الجانبين مع الحرص على أن تكون الفصول والمباحث إبراز هذا الهدف وعدم الدخول في تفصيلات جانبية، تربك القارئ أو تجعل الباحث تائهاً في غياهب البحث الفلسفي، ووفقاً لهذا المبدأ قسم الكتاب إلى أربعة فصول رئيسية تناول الفصل الأول من هذا الكتاب الجذور الفلسفية لنظرية المثل، لكون نظرية المثل لم تنشأ من العدم، بل هي مزيج فلسفي من مفكرين سابقين، موضوعة بعقلية وقادة، مضاف إليها إبداعات خارقة "كان أفلاطون أول من أخرج إلى حيز الوجود عملاً تركيبياً جامعاً يشمل كل ما وصل إليه سابقوه وأول من قدم صورة كاملة للعالم فرضت نفسها على جميع المفكرين أكثر من ألفي عام، لذا كان الفصل الأول يسير بهذا الاتجاه، ويمهد للدخول إلى الفصل الثاني: الذي خصص للتعريف بنظرية المثل، وأهميتها، وأدلة إثباتها.
أما الفصل الثالث، فكان بناؤه قائماً على توضيح اعتبار أفلاطون المثل هي الحقيقة وما سواها نسخ وظلال، أي النظر إلى المثل من الناحية المعرفية، وبيان موقعها بين سائر أقسام المعرفة الأخرى، وتضمن هذا الفصل أيضاً مناقشة أفلاطون نفسه لصعوبات المثل وحلولها.
أما الفصل الرابع: فخصص للنقد الأرسطي لنظرية المثل.
