أن التحرير هو الفن الذي يقوم الصحفي من خلاله بالتعبير عما يدور أو يجري في المجتمع من وقائع أو أحداث من خلال أشكال فنية تتبع قواعد وأسس معينة لابد أن يعيها الصحفي جيدا, أو هو فن تحويل الوقائع والأحداث, كما شاهدها وعاينها الصحفي أو استقاها من مصادر مختلفة, ألي كلمات مقروئة في قوالب فنية تتخذ أشكالا متعددة, تحقق في النهاية وظائف الصحافة المختلفة من معرفة وتثقيف وتوجيه وتسلية وترفيه.
والأشكال المختلفة التي يوصل الصحفي رسالته من خلالها إلي القارىء أو المستقبل أو المتلقي لهذه الرسالة هي: الخبر, الحديث أو الحوار وأو اللقاء, التحقيق, التقرير, المقال, وهذه الأشكال الرئيسية لفن التحرير الصحفي, وتتفرع من كل فن منها فروع أخري أو تنقسم كل منها ألي أنولع متعددة, وسوف نتناول في الصفحات التالية هذه الفنون التحريرية بالتفصيل من الناحيتين النظرية والتطبيقية, وقد حاولت في هذا الكتاب الجمع مابين ما درسته و قرأته في كتب الصحافة وبين ما تعلمته من خلال عملي بالصحافة كمحرر ورئيس للأقسام ومدير لتحرير جريدة الأهرام المسائي, ولذلك أتمني أن يجد دارس الصحافة وممارسها في هذا الكتاب ما يفيده سواء في تكوين أرضية علمية نظرية لفنون التحرير الصحفية وما يأخذ بيده وهو يخطو خطواته الأولي في بلاط صاحبه الجلالة.
وقد ركزت في هذا الكتاب علي فنون الخبر والحديث والتحقيق لأنها أكثر الفنون التحريرية شيوعياً واستخداماًو وخاصة من قبل الصحفيين المبتدئين وأيضا كبار الصحفيين.. ولم أتناول المقال لأن مرحلة كتابته تأتي متأخرة بعض الشىء في حياتنا الصحفية.
