درس في هذا الكتاب أربعة مستويات من لغتنا العربية هي "الفصحى" ويقابلها "اللهجات" و"النثر" ويقابله "الشعر" بهدف معرفة الواقع الذي كان عليه كل منها بين الناطقين بالعربية والكشف عن الخصائص اللغوية التي يتميز بها كل منها، مع بيان نظرة علماء العربية من اللغويين والنحاة لوجود هذه المستويات الأربعة أصلاً، وما ترتب على نظرتهم من آراء وأفكار, هذا جانب التراث في هذا البحث، وتحقيقه إنجاز جديد ومفيد لكن هذا البحث لم يقف عند ذلك، بل تجاوزه إلى بيان نظرة علم اللغة الحديث إلى "المستوى اللغوي"، والأسس التي تقوم عليها النظرة، بهدف إضاءة تراثنا وتفسيره بما يفيد منها، وذلك في ثلاثة فصول هي: (الفصل الأول: النظرة الحديثة لتحديد المستوى اللغوي، الفصل الثاني: الفصحى واللهجات،الفصل الثالث: لغة النثر ولغة الشعر)، والكتاب، يقدم حلولاً علمية لكثير من الخلط والإضطراب الذي حوته دراساتنا اللغوية القديمة الي ضمتها كتب النحو والصرف واللغة عن لهجات القبائل وصلة الفصحى بها، وعن لغة الشعر وخلطها بالنثر في استنتاج القواعد العربية، كما يبين قيمة الآراء التي دارت حول هذه المستويات الأربعة من علمائنا القدامى رحمهم الله.
