يتضمن الكتاب لقاءات مع "الفيكتوريين القدامى" الذين احتفظوا بأسرار عن الحياة داخل أسوار تلك القلعة البريطانية التي استُغلت أحيانا للتجسس على كبرى العائلات في العالم العربي وأفريقيا، وعن قوانينها الصارمة وطرق العقاب، وكيف تحولت تلك المدرسة وأفل نجمها بعد تأميمها، ليكون تاريخها صورة مُثلى لما بلغته القيم الليبرالية من أوْج، كما أنه – في الوقت نفسه- مشهد محزن ومأساوي لانحسار تلك القيم ومبادئ التحديث في العالم العربي.
