عفيف الدين التلمساني 610-690هــ هو واحد من كبار الشعراء المتصوفة القادمين من المغرب العربي إلى المشرق، ومن أكثرهم إثارة للجدل، تنقل بين مصر والشام وتعرف إلى كبار المتصوفين، يقول عنه القاضي شهاب الدين بن الفضل:" لم يأت إلا بما خفّ على القلوب، وبرئ من العيوب، رقّ شعره فكاد أن يُشرب، ودقّ فلا غرو للقضب أن ترقص وللحمام أن يطرب."، وابن العماد يقول:"وأما شعره ففي الذروة العليا من البلاغة."

ويعتبر ديوان التلمساني أشهر وأهم مؤلفاته التي تنوعت في مجالي التصوف واللغة. وقد برع التلمساني في تقديم شروح لعدد من نصوص الصوفية الرمزية والكشف عن أسرارها كمواقف النفري وتائية ابن الفارض وغيرها، وعلى هذه الأفكار نفسها يقوم شعر التلمساني الذي كفّره إمام السنة ابن تيمية وكان من أشد الطاعنين في التلمساني، فأضاف بذلك جدلا على جدل، فيما يخص أفكار التلمساني وشعره كليهما.
