هذا بحث اختاره المؤلف، وجعل موضوعه "فقه اللغة في الكتب العربية" ليتخذه وسيلة إلى دراسة "المنهج" العربي في درس اللغة في كتب معينة، ولكي لا يتشعب البحث، ولكي لا يخضع للتعميمات، فقد قصره على كتب ثلاثة منها كتابات سماهما صاحباهما "بفقه اللغة" وهما كتابا ابن فارس والثعالبي، أما الثالث فهو كتاب الخصائص لابن حنى، ولما كان الهدف من البحث هو تحديد المصطلحات بما قد يساعد على رفع شيء من هذا الغموض فقد تناول المؤلف تاريخ "فقه اللغة" و"علم اللغة" عند الغربيين وعند العرب، ليصل منه إلى محاولة "فهم" المنهج العربي.
