لقد فهم القدماء درس الصرف فهماً صحيحاً حين جعلوه مع النحو علماً واحداً، أو حين أشار بعضهم إلى ضرورة دراسته قبل النحو على ما قرر أبو الفتح ابن جني في شرحه على تصريف أبي عثمان. غير أن الكتب القديمة التي أفردها أصحابها للصرف امتلأت بكثير من الفروض والتمرينات التي يبلغ بعضها درجة الحيل والألغاز، مما يجعلها عسيرة الفهم من ناحية، ومشكوكاً في جدواها من ناحية أخرى.
والذي لا شك فيه أن الصرف لا غنى عنه في الدرس اللغوي، وفي الدرس العربي على وجه الخصوص، لكن الذي لا شك فيه أيضاً أن الصرف لم يلق حتى الآن ما ينبغي له من الدرس الذي يعين على تقديمه في صورة تيسّر الإفادة منه.
ولقد كنّا قدّمنا كتابنا (التطبيق النحوي) فوجدنا أنه ساعد طلاب قسم اللغة العربية على فهم كثير من مسائل النحو العربي، وشجعنا ذلك على أن نحاول معالجة المسائل الصرفية على نفس المنهج. وها نحن أولاء نقدم (التطبيق الصرفي) مشتملاً على أهم الموضوعات التي ينبغي أن يعرفها الطالب معرفة صحيحة، ومن ثم حذفنا موضوعات لم نر ضرورة لإثباتها. وإذا كان الدرس النحوي يقتضي درس الصرف، فإن الصرف لا يمكن فهمه فهماً صحيحاً دون معرفة القوانين التي يجري عليها علم الأصوات. غير أنّا لم نفعل شيئاً من ذلك بل التزمنا المصطلح القديم مع شيء من إعادة الترتيب؛ فقسمناه ثلاثة أبواب بعد المدخل: جعلنا باباً للأفعال والمشتقات، وباباً للأسماء، وثالثاً للإعلال والإبدال.
