بإيقاع سردي بطيء وعبر استخدام تقنية التذكر والإسترجاع يرصد الروائي الجزائري عبد القادر بن سالم التحولات البطيئة التي طاولت حياة القبائل في بلاده قبل وبعد الثورة التحريرية. فيعود بنا إلى عالم "القفل"، حيث هاجرت ثلة من أقوياء القبيلة وفرسانها، في اتجاه الساحل من أجل الحصول على الرزق والمال، أو ما يسمى بالسعي، حيث كان الرجال يلاقوا الأهوال والصعاب، ولكن من دون أن يتراجعوا أو يملوا، فيحضر في الرواية شخصية الحاج منصور، وامعمر لدريسي وأمبارك الماصة الذين يشكلون ذاكرة المكان في (واد قير) الذي نسجت الذاكرة حوله الأساطير والقصص، والمغامرات التي كان يخوضها الأهالي مع كل موسم فيضان، يغمر فيها الأرض "ظل الواد رمزاً للحياة وللموت في آن، يحبه الناس ويبغضونه، عطوف كأب مرهف الإحساس، حين يهبهم الخصب والنماء، ويحوّل أرضهم إلى جنة خضراء ...، وجبار حين يهيج، فيحوّل السهل إلى رماد ...".
في هذا الفضاء الروائي تدور الرواية وتتنقل بين الأزمنة والأمكنة والحكايات، وقد تخلط بين التاريخ والأسطورة، الحقيقة والخيال، مع غياب الحوار المباشر في الرواية، فالراوي العليم هو الذي يحكي دائماً، ويذكر أسماء الأماكن والقرى، ويحدد التواريخ، ويصوّر العادات والتقاليد والطقوس الشعبية، التي يبلغ الحكي فيها حد الشعر حين تحضر إلى الذاكرة أهازيج الفلاحين الجميلة: "زرعي يا عوج الرقاب / وحمات عليك القابلة / نبغي لك سرية أرجال / تمشي وتجي كيف أجمال / غابمناجلها طائبة". وبهذا يأخذ الروائي مذلقة الحياة اليومية ويوظفها توظيفاً فنياً في الرواية، فعرف كيف يحافظ على التوازن بين المادة الأنثروبولوجية وإعادة توظيفها روائياً، فأضاف إلى الذاكرة العربية والجزائرية عملاً جديداً يستحق القراءة.
