في كتابه هذا، يدرس عبد القادر بن سالم البنية السردية في الرواية المغاربية الجديدة من خلال تراكم نصوصها وتنوعها، فيختار نماذج لروائيين، وصلوا الى قمة الإبداع الفني بخلقهم واقع فني معادل لواقع الحياة، بفضل التشخيص الأسلوبي للغة. وهذا عنصر أساسي من عناصر الحداثة في الخطاب الروائي المغاربي، وعلامة دالة على خصوصيته.
يقول المؤلف في معرض تقديمه لهذا الكتاب: "إن الحديث عن البنية السردية (الجديدة) يعني البحث عن أهم الانجازات الفنية التي شهدتها هذه الرواية، باعتبارها رواية تراهن على النص، وعلى شعريات الخطاب، ولا تتوكأ مرجعياً بشكل مكشوف على الواقع العيني، رغم أنها تنطلق منه، لأن الرواية غير قابلة للتقنين: إنها جنس يبحث بشكل دائم، ويحلل ذاته أبداً، ويعيد النظر في كل الأشكال الفنية (...) ولعل قراءتي لهذه الروايات تدخل ضمن القراءة التي تتوكأ على التأويل، المستند الى منطق في القراءة، لا الى تأويل لا يستمد رؤاه من النظريات النقدية، أو الواقع الابداعي العربي الراهن...
إن هذه القراءة – حتماً – تستفيد من إنجازات النظريات النقدية الجديدة التي تهتم ببنية النصوص، قبل أن تشتغل بشكل كامل على المضامين، إلا أن هذا لا يعني أن قراءة المؤلف لهذه الروايات لم تضع في الحسبان مسألة "المرجع" بل كان "المرجع" حاضراً مع كل كتّاب هذه النصوص، إلا أن الطرح كان مخالفاً مع روايات اعتبرت روايات واقعية، في مقابل هذه النصوص الجديدة والتي صنفت بروايات النص.
يقسم الكتاب الى خمسة فصول جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: الفصل الأول: تشكل الرواية الجديدة في الوطن العربي، الفصل الثاني: حدود الواقع ورمزية العجائبي في رواية "وراء السراب قليلاً لإبراهيم درغوثي"، الفصل الثالث: المكان وامتداد الفضاء في رواية "الجنازة" لأحمد المديني، الفصل الرابع: تعدد الأفضية وجمالية الرمز في رواية "تزييف الحجر" لإبراهيم الكوني، والفصل الخامس والأخير: رمزية الحكاية وجمالية اللغة في رواية "وادي الظلام" لعبد الملك مرتاض.
