هذا الكتاب "طرائف الشعراء ونوادرهم" جاء خلاصة اهتمام المؤلف بموضوع الفكاهة العربية التي تعرف القارئ على أهم الصفات العقلية والروحية التي تميز مجتمعاً عن آخر، لأن جوّ الفكاهة والضحك والمدح هو افضل جو يعيش فيه الإنسان بعيداً عن التصنع والتكلف، هذه الطرائف تسلي الهم وتذهب الغم، وتفضي بالمرء إلى الابتسامة والتفاؤل بالحياة. فهي تجمع، إلى جانب الضحك، العبرة والفائدة فضلاً عن إزالة شبح الخوف والقلق والعبوس عن وجه الإنسان، ولئن كانت غاية المؤلف من هذه الكتاب، الترويح عن النفس، والإمتاع والمؤانسة، وإبعاد الملل، والسآمة عن النفس، فإن المؤلف بث فيه فكراً سديدة، وحكماً رشيدة، تتندّر بها ونتفكه من خلال العرض المجمل لنوادر الشعراء عبر العصور العربية في إبان نهضتنا الأدبية، ابتداءً من العصر الجاهلي حتى عصر النهضة، مروراً بالعصر الأموي والعصر العباسي والعصر الأندلسي والعصر المملوكي، كما يمكننا أن نطلع على بعض النواحي الأدبية في تراثنا العظيم، وان نستفيد من نطاق التاريخ القديم ومآثره المجيدة، ولا يخفى ما لذلك من أثر في صقل العقل بالثقافة والفكر، وتنمية الملكة اللغوية بذخيرة لا تنضب، وغنى إنساني وفير.
لا يخلو أي تجمع إنساني من ذلك الشخص الطريف الذي وهبه الله البديهة والحساسية النقدية المرهفة، التي تجعله يلتقط أحداث الحياة وأحوالها العادية فتتحول على يديه إلى ضحك.
وتاريخنا العربي، حافل بهذه الشخصيات المرحة الطريفة التي أبدعت ونسج الناس حولها الكثير من الطرائف والنوارد، المفعمة بروح النقد الاجتماعية والخلقي والأدبي والسياسي.
