مما لا شك فيه أن ينشرح صدر المسلم بسماعه عن بلوغ عدد مسلمي غرب أفريقيا ثمانين مليوناً، ونصفه هو عدد مسلمي نيجيريا وحدها على التقريب، وهذا عدد يتفائل بضخامته كل غيور على دينه، ولكن كثيراً من الناس كتفون بالتفاؤل بالمظاهر، دون أن يكلفوا أنفسهم مؤونة البحث عن السباب والسرائر، وحق لهم أن يبحثوا عن تلك السباب والسرائر، كما يفعل قليل من الباحثين المفكرين الذين لا يكتفون بظواهر الأمور؛ بل ينظرون إلى بواطنها وبواعثها، ومثل هؤلاء من يتساءلون عن نبأ الإسلام: قديمه وحديثه، ويبنون من الماضي دعائم المستقبل، وكل من يتكلف مثل هذا البحث في أسباب انتشار الإسلام بغرب أفريقيا، يلتقي بأسماء رجال يشغل تاريخهم سطوراً في بطون الكتب العربية والإفرنجية على السواء، ومن أولئك الرجال: "الإمام المغيلي" الذي نهتم هنا بجمع آثاره المبعثرة في خبايا الطروس المطمورة، حتى يمكن الرجوع إليها والإطلاع عليها في ثنايا الصحف المنشورة، تخليداً لمقومات حضارتنا الإسلامية التي ابتدأت منذ القرن العاشر الميلادي، وامتدت إلى زمن الإحتلال الأوربي، وتجديداً لآثار "المغيلي" في إنعاش تلك الحضارة التي إزدهرت في هذه البلاد في القرون الوسطى، فإلى من يتطلع إلى مثل هذا البحث نقدم هذه السطور في هذه الأوراق.
