اصطدمت فكرة الأمة -الدولة التي أرساها الإسلام، بما تعنيه من تجاوز للوحدة الاجتماعية المتمثلة في القبيلة، بالعصبيات القبلية المتجذرة في نفوس كثيرين من أبناء منطقة الجزيرة العربية حيث مهبط الوحي وموطن رسالة الإسلام. لا بل كانت الدافع الأساس وراء تمرد عدد من القبائل بعد وفاة الرسول محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم فيما عرف تاريخياً بالردة. وهذه القبائل إذ لم تستوعب فكرة الأمة ولم تستسغ قبول سلطة خارجية غير أعرافها، كان من الطبيعي أن ترى في الزكاة (وهي الفريضة الدينية) إتاوة، وأن تطلب نبياً -ولو كاذباً- كما لقريش نبي.
يبحث هذا الكتاب في الردة -مفهوماً وسيرورة تاريخية- في قراءة داخلية لمنهجيات المؤرخين الذين كتبوا عن "الردة والفتوح" في إشارة إلى اعتبارهم حروب الردة تمثل أوليات الفتوح الإسلامية.
لقد نظرت المؤلفة إلى الردة نظرة شمولية، في نطاق الحركة الإسلامية العامة، وفي إطار التطورات التاريخية. وبذلت جهداً ملحوظاً في الإحاطة بالمصادر والتعريف بها وفي تقييم الروايات ونقد المعلومات، كما في التعريف بالقبائل واتجاهاتها المختلفة لتحديد طبيعة ما يسمى بالردة بأنها تحركات قبلية متفرقة واجهتها حركة واحدة، هي الحركة الإسلامية تسير في اتجاه ذي خطين: نشر الإسلام ووحدة الأمة، لتنتهي بتوحيد الجزيرة ولتنطلق مباشرة في الفتوح خارجها.
