حاول المؤلف من خلال هذا الكتاب أن يعرض تصوراً عاماً لأسلوب الدراسة العلمية للمجتمع القروي، كما حاول أن يستخدم هذا التصور العام في دراسات محددة عن القرية المصرية، وقد تشكل هذا التصور من خلال المناقشات الناقدة للوضع الراهن للدراسات الاجتماعية القروية عالمياً ومحلياً. ولقد خرج الكتاب وفقاً لهذه المحاولة، في بابين وخمسة فصول تنتظم في تسلسل منطقي، فالفصل الأول يناقش الوضع الراهن للدراسات الاجتماعية القروية ويتتبع تطورها عالمياً من ناحية ويحاول أن يقتفي آثار تياراتها، كما تنعكس في الدراسات والبحوث المحلية من ناحية أخرى. أما الفصل الثاني فإنه يتناول المحاولات المختلفة التي بذلت لتفسير طبيعة الحياة في المجتمع القروي بصفة عامة والعوامل التي أدت إلى تمايزه عن المجتمع الحضري المقابل له، وينتهي هذا الفصل بتقديم إطار تصوري للدراسة العلمية للمجتمع القروي يستند إلى ثلاثة أبعاد، البعد التاريخي والبعد التكنولوجي والبعد الطبقي.
أما الباب الثاني فيشتمل على محاولات للإفادة من هذا الإطار التصوري المقترح في دراسة البناء الاجتماعى للقرية المصرية. حيث يعالج الفصل الثالث تطور الملكية الزراعية في مصر باعتبارها تشكل الأساس الاقتصادي الذي يلقي بآثاره على مختلف جوانب البناء الاجتماعي القروي، ويتناول الفصل الرابع البناء الطبقي في القرية المصرية، أما الفص الخامس والأخير فقد خصص لدراسة بناء القوة في هذا المجتمع.
ولقد حاول المؤلف في هذه الدراسات أن يستفيد من إسهامات المنظور التاريخي في فهم البناء الاجتماعي في القرية المصرية بوصفه ظاهرة متطورة تاريخياً كما حاول أيضاً أن يفسر بعض النتائج الأمبريقية المحدودة في ضوء المسيرة.
