المجتمع الريفي الذي تكون القرية وحدته الأساسية أخذ الآن ينال نصيباً متزايداً من اهتمام العلماء وعلى الأخص المشتغلين بالدراسات الأنثروبولوجية والاجتماعية. وفي هذا الإطار يأتي هذا الكتاب الذي يسبر أغوار الحياة الاجتماعية في المجتمع القروي دراسة وبحثاً وتحليلاً. وذلك من خلال نموذج متمثل بقرية الباحث (القيطون) وذلك كنموذج للتغير في المجتمع، مضيفاً في الطبعة الثالثة نموذجين آخرين للتغير الاجتماعي في المجتمع القروي هما "هلا" و"كفر الشيخ" متبعاً في ذلك المنهج المقارن. ويقول الباحث بأنه ولما كان يؤمن أن كل بحث في أي مجتمع إنما يسهم في تقدم فهم الحياة الاجتماعية وفي نمو النظرية السوسيولوجية، ولما كان يؤمن بأن المجتمع القروي العربي يختلف عن المجتمع الريفي الأميركي سواء من حيث موضوع الدراسة أو من حيث المنهج وأسلوب الدراسة الأمر الذي جعله يتجنّب الاعتماد على علم الاجتماع الأميركي في فهم المجتمع، لاختلاف خصائص كل من المجتمعين المصري والأميركي.
ويضيف الباحث بأن صِلاته المستمدة والعميقة بأهل قريته وإدراكه التام بكل من الثقافتين القروية والحضرية وما حدث في كل منهما من تغير خاصة في السنوات الأخيرة، كل ذلك دفعه إلى إعادة الدراسة لتلمس نواحي التغير ومظاهره، ليقدم بهذه الدراسة للقارئ العربي صورة كاملة وحديثة عما وصلت إليه دراسة القرية موضحاً ما غمض من نقاط في طبعات دراسته السابقة خاصة وأن من واجب علم الاجتماع في بلده جمهورية مصر العربية أن يتلمس نواحي التغير الاجتماعي المترتبة على التطبيق الاشتراكي الواسع والمصاحبة لخطط التنمية الاجتماعية والاقتصادية في مصر.
