يعالج هذا الكتاب محرّماً من محرمات السياسة العربية، فيلج منطقة الصراع السياسي الداخلي لدى النخبة التي حكمت الجزائر منذ الثورة إلى اليوم. ولأن المؤلف لا يؤمن بنظرية الإجماع الرائجة كثيراً في الوطن العربي، بل يعتقد على عكسها بنظرية الاختلاف التي يراها سلوكاً طبيعياً في السياسة، فقد توصل إلى تفكيك آليات هذا الصراع الجزائري، أطرافه ونتائجه. كيف تفوق العسكر على المدنيين، بل على الدولة والمجتمع؟ ما هي حقيقة الصراع الإيديولوجى بين الإسلاميين واللائكيين، أو بين الاشتراكيين واللبراليين؟ وما مدى تأثير الصراع الاثني بين البربر والعرب أو حتى بين البربر أنفسهم، شاوية وقبايل؟ ثم كيف ساهم الصراع الجهوي بين نخبة آتية من الشرق هيمنت على الدولة، ونخبة جاءت من الغرب لم تجد مكانها المناسب في أجهزة الدولة؟
الأطروحة الأساسية التي دافع عنها المؤلف تكمن في إبرازه هيمنه الجيش الجزائري على الدولة والمجتمع. هذه الهيمنة نتجت عن عوامل سياسية وتنظيمية وجدت جذورها في طبيعة الثورة، التي اعتمدت مبدأ أولوية العسكري على الدبلوماسي، وتدعمت عندما زحفت قوات هواري بومدين على العاصمة سنة 1962، ثم ترسخت نهائياً بانقلاب 19 حزيران/يونيو 1965، عندما أصبحت الثقافة العسكرية مهيمنة على الحياة السياسية.
أدت صراعات النخب إلى الأزمة الحالية التي تعيشها الجزائر، فما هي أسباب هذه الأزمة العميقة أو المباشرة؟ ما هي طبيعة الجبهة الإسلامية للإنقاذ؟ تكوينها الاجتماعي؟ أسباب نجاحها ثم فشلها؟ وأي دور لعبته المؤسسة العسكرية من أجل المحافظة على وحدة النخبة الحاكمة، ومنعها من التفكك أو الخيانة؟ وأخيراً أي مستقبل ينتظر الجزائر؟
يحاول المؤلف أن يجيب على كل هذه الأسئلة من خلال منهجية أكاديمية علمية صارمة، لا محال فيها للانحياز، ولا للشعارات، ولا للتمذهب الإيديولوجى... استخدم المنهج التاريخي تارة، ونموذج شارلز تيلي في الثورة تارة أخرى... كل ذلك بأسلوب سهل متاح لغير المختص في الموضوع الجزائري.
