يمثل علم وظائف الأعضاء الطريقة التي يعمل بها جسم الإنسان، وهي دراسة لكيفية أداء أنسجة وأعضاء الجسم المختلفة وتكامل هذه الوظائف معاً، وعلم وظائف الأعضاء بما ينطوي عليه من حقائق ومفاهيم وقواعد ومبادئ علمية تشكل أساساً في التعرف على آلية التغيرات التي تحصل في الأجهزة الوظيفية لجسم الإنسان.
ويعد علم وظائف الأعضاء من المواضيع العلمية المهمة في مجال التربية الرياضية والتدريب الرياضي، نظراً لإرتباطه بالتغيرات الوظيفية الحاصلة التي تظهر في جسم الإنسان أثناء ممارسة الأنشطة الرياضية، والمواضيع التي شملها هذا الكتاب تمتاز بالشمولية، وكان الهدف الأساسي منها هو تقديم المعلومات الضرورية عن علم وظائف الأعضاء وأساسياته بأسلوب مبسط يسهل تناوله من قبل الطلبة الدارسين، من أجل الإسهام في تعميق الوعي العلمي لدى طلبة كليات ومعاهد التربية البدنية، وقد قسمت مادة الكتاب إلى ستة فصول حيث تضمن الفصل الأول موضوع علم وظائف الأعضاء وأهميته وأنظمة الطاقة كذلك النظام الهوائي واللاهوائي، أما الفصل الثاني فقد اشتمل على الخلية الحيوانية والخواص الكيميائية النسيج العضلي والألياف العضلية.
أما الفصل الرابع فقد اشتمل على الدم، وعوامل تجديد خلايا الدم وكريات الدم، فيما احتوى الفصل الخامس على الجهاز التنفسي وتركيب الجهاز التنفسي والعمليات الفسيولوجية في التنفس، وتضمن الفصل السادس الجهاز العصبي وأقسامه.
