إن من أجلّ العلوم الشرعية ومن أفضلها: علم الحديث النبوي الشريف. وقد قام علماء الحديث بخدمة الحديث خدمات جليلة، وكانت عنايتهم بالسنة النبوية المطهرة عناية فائقة فزخرت المكتبة الإسلامية بآلاف المصنفات الحديثية التي تشهد على اهتمامهم بالسنة النبوية اهتماماً بالغاً. وقد بلغوا في معرفتهم وحفظهم واتقانهم ما يعجب منه كل ناظر في أخبارهم. وقد تمخض عن المحدثين أعمال هي آلاف المصنفات الحديثية التي تزخر بها المكتبة الإسلامية، وما زال جزء كبير منها مخطوطاً في مكتبات عديدة.
وقد كان القرن التاسع الهجرية وبداية القرن العاشر، أي عصر السخاوي والسيوطي، نهاية عصر الحفاظ، ثم جاء بعدهم جماعة من المحدثين لم يبلغوا مقدارهم وشأوهم، إلا أنهم هم أيضاً خدموا الحديث الشريف خدمات جليلة، وصنفوا فيه مصنفات قيمة، فكانوا باعثين للهمم، وناهضين بعلم الحديث، بعد أن ضعف شيئاً ما من وقت الحفاظ المتقدمين. وإن مصنفات هؤلاء بما حوت من فؤاد وفرائد وتحقيقات باهرة، لم تزل تكملة لعمل المتقدمين. وكان من بين أعيانهم: ابن عرَّاق الكناني صاحب "تنزيه الشريعة"، وعلي المنقي الهندي صاحب "كنز العمال"، وملاّ علي القاري صاحب "شرح المشكاة" وغيرهم. وقد وقع اختيار خليل إبراهيم قوتلاي على الإمام العلامة، الجامع لعلوم شتى، الشيخ "ملّى علي بن سلطان محمد القاري الهروي ثم المكي" المتوفى سنة 1014هـ، ليكون مدار الدراسة في هذا الكتاب، حيث شملت حياته العلمية وآثارها أبرز ثمارها في الحديث النبوي.
