اجتمعت في تكوين شخصية الإمام يحيى بن شرف بن مري بن حسن بن حسين محمد جمعة بن حزام، أبي زكريا محيي الدين الدمشقي الشافعي الملقب بالنووي، عوامل عادية وأخرى دينية، هي مواهب من الله تعالى لمن أراد له من عباده، ارتحل لطلب العلم إلى دمشق فقصد الجامع الأموي ونزله ثم استقرب الحال في المدرسة الرواحية التي تحقق له فيها السكن الذي يأوي إليه والشيخ الإمام المتفق على علمه وزهده وهو الشيخ الكمال إسحاق المغربي. وقد جمع شيوخه وتلاميذه على علوم مرتبته وطول باعه في الفقه والتفسير وحس ديانته وصدق لهجته.
ومؤلف هذا الكتاب مدفوعاً برغبة صادقة في خدمة الدين وتأدية لواجب إنصاف هذا الإمام الورع التقي فآلى على نفسه أن يؤلف هذه الدراسة ليبني جهود الإمام في خدمة السنة النبوية المطهرة على وجه الإجمال وليعمل على إبراز سيرة هذا الرجل الفذة. مستعيناً على ذلك بالمصادر القديمة وكتب التراجم ومؤلفاته المطبوعة والمخطوطة والمفقودة وآثاره الحديثية. وعمد إلى تفصيل القول فيها وبسطه والتعريف بها وتوثيق عزوها وبيان سبب تأليفها، كما أولى عناية لاجتهاداته في علوم الحديث من كتابيه التقريب والإرشاد أو غيرهما. واستقرأ مؤلفاته الحديثية وخرج منها بنتائج نقدية أوضحت عد الذهبي له ناقداً، واقتطفت نماذج من أحكامه على الأحاديث صحة وحسناً وضعفاً. وأعد فهارس للآيات والأحاديث والآثار والأشعار والأعلام، والمواضيع والأبحاث.
