في السنوات الاخيرة، افرزت التطورات الهائلة في مجال تطوير مناهج الرياضيات رؤى وتوجهات جديدة لما يجب ان يكون محل اهتمام رئيسي في تعليم وتقويم تعلم الرياضيات، هذه الرؤى والتوجهات، والتي تم توثيقها في عدة وثائق عالمية لعل من اهمها وثائق: معايير المنهج والتقويم والمعايير والمستويات، حيث ركزت هذه المعايير على اهداف وغايات كبيرة لتنمية القدرات الرياضية، وهي: فهم المفاهيم، والمعرفة الاجرائية، وحل المشكلات، ولاكساب الطلاب المقدرة الرياضية، اضافة الى الاهتمامات المنصبة على مجالات المحتوى الرياضي الخمس ( الحس العددي وخواص الاعداد والعمليات عليها، والقياس، والهندسة والحس الفراغي، وتحليل البيانات والاحصاء والاحتمالات، والجبر والدوال الجبرية) وبالتالي فان الوثائق السابقة تؤكد على ان هناك حاجة لاعادة النظر في اهداف تعليم الرياضيات، وعليه حددت خمسة اهداف ينتظر من الطالب بلوغها تتمثل في: 1- تقدير الرياضيات، 2- ثقة المتعلم بقدراته وامكانياته في الرياضيات، 3- التمكن من حل المشكلات، 4- التواصل بلغة الرياضيات وافكارها، 5- استخدام اساليب التفكير الرياضي المنطقي.
