مؤلف هذا الكتاب "هنري هافلوك ألس" 1859-1939 ليس كاتباً عادياً، فهو طبيب متخصص بالجنس والسلوك الجنسي، وهو بالإضافة إلى ذلك مفكر وفيلسوف وحكيم، وله إطلاعات واسعة في موضوع الجنس بصورة عامة وآراء ومدرسة خاصة في التربية الجنسية الحديثة بصورة خاصة. وقد عمد إلى تأليف هذا الكتاب الذي صدر أصلاً بعنوان "سايكولوجيا الجنس" وقد وضع فيه خلاصة خبراته الطويلة وخبرات علماء وباحثين آخرين.
وقد قام المترجم بتقسيم هذا الكتاب إلى قسمين، كان القسم الأول منه بعنوان "الجنس والسلوك الجنسي عند الإنسان" الذي صدر قبل فترة قصيرة، وهذا هو القسم الثاني "الجنس والزواج وفن الحب" وقد تضمن أقسام ثلاث، الأول تناول موضوع الزواج، وتحدث القسم الثاني عن فن الحب وخرج القسم الثالث باستنتاجات عامة.
يقع الكتاب في ثلاثة أقسام: الأول ويتناول الزواج وهو بدوره مقسم تسعة فروع منها مسألة التقشف أو الامتناع عن ممارسة الجنس والتحكم في عملية الإنجاب والعنّة والبرود الجنسي وسن اليأس الخ.. أما القسم الثاني فيتناول فن الحب وهو بدوره يقع في فرعين الأول الدافع الجنسي بالعلاقة مع الحب، والثاني لماذا يكون الحب فناً؟ وأما القسم الثالث والأخير فموضوعه الأساسي استنتاجات عامة ويتفرع إلى موضوعين (1) الطبيعة الديناميكية للدفاع الجنسي و(2) التسامي.
