في سنة 1939 ظهر استعمال جديد للفظ إسقاط عند لورنس ك.فرانك عندما وصف بعض الوسائل غير المباشرة في دراسة الشخصية التي تهدف إلى الوصول بالفرد إلى أن يقدم تقييماً لصفاته دون أن ينتبه إلى أنه يقوم بذلك. ومنذ ذلك الحين شاع استخدام لفظ إسقاط في مجال علم النفس الإكلينيكي مرتبطاً بهذه الاختبارات ذات المادة غير المتشكلة والمبهمة إلى حد ما والتي عرفت باسم الاختبارات الإسقاطية كاختيار قع الحبر لروشاخ واختبار تفهم الموضوع لموراي واختبار تكملة الجمل الناقصة... الخ. عن هذه الاختبارات يتحدث الدكتور فيصل عباس في هذا الكتاب الذي يضمّ دراسة نظرية تدور حول نظريات، وتقنيات، وإجراءات الاختبارات الإسقاطية. وبصورة عامة ينقسم الكتاب إلى قسمين: الأول يتضمن نظريات الشخصية أما القسم الثاني فيحتوي على الأساليب الإسقاطية وطرق كشفها للشخصية وأخيراً زوّد الباحث كتابه بدراسة حالة ميدانية تكشف للقارئ عن اضطراب الشخصية-وقد طبق على هذه الحالة اختبار "تفهم الموضوع-كل ذلك من أجل إزالة أي التباس، وجعل مادة علم النفس سهلة التناول والقراءة والفهم.
مفهوم الشخصية في علم النفس هو بناء علمي أعدّ لعرض وتوضيح الحقيقة لنفسية للفرد. ورغم محاولات التوحيد العديدة فقد بقي علم النفس يضم تحت جناحيه عدداً هائلاً من النظريات والمدارس حيث تدرس كل واحدة منها الشخصية من منظورها الخاص. وتقدم كل نظرية تفسيراً وإدراكاً معينين.
ولقد أصبحت الاختبارات الإسقاطية من الأدوات الهامة التي يستعان بها، في الوقوف على الجوانب المختلفة للشخصية، وتشخيص الحالات السوية والمرضية، ومعرفة ما يعانيه الفرد من مشكلات وصراعات.
ومصطلح اختبار إسقاطي يشير إلى بعض الوسائل غير المباشرة في دراسة الشخصية والتي بواسطتها يمكن الكشف عن شخصية الفرد نتيجة ما تتيحه من مادة مناسبة يُسقط عليها الفرد رغباته ودوافعه ومشاعره ومدركاته دون أن يفطن إلى ما يقوم به.
فالاختبارات النفسية وسائل تعين على الفحص والكشف والتشخيص. ويمكن الإفادة منها في دراسة الشخصية والعيادات النفسية، لكشف صراعات الفرد ومشكلاته.
