تساعد الأوضاع الاقتصادية السائدة في كل فترة على فهم التطورات والتغيرات التي تصيب النظم السياسية والاجتماعية. ولهذا الغرض يأتي كتاب "الحياة الاقتصادية في مصر في العصر المملوكي" الذي نقلب صفحاته. وهو يتضمن بحثاً يتناول المؤلف من خلاله دراسة "الحياة الزراعية في مصر زمن الدولة المملوكية الثانية، وذلك على اعتبارها دعامة الاقتصاد المصري، حيث شهدت مصر في القرن الأول من حكم السلطنة المملوكية نمواً ملحوظاً في عدد السكان، تمثل بتوسع النشاط العمراني حول مدينة القاهرة، وارتفاع عدد القرى في الوجهين القبلي والبحري. إلا أن تفكك النظام السياسي، والإهمال الصحي، وانتشار الأوبئة والطواعين، واستئثار السلطة الحاكمة بالمقدرات الاقتصادية للشعب المصري، وفقدان الرغبة لدى الفلاحين الصغار في ممارسة الزراعة، قد أدت إلى تراجع مع هذا النمو.
هذا وقد تطلبت هذه الدراسة من الباحث تناول جغرافية مصر الطبيعية والبشرية، من خلال النظر إلى التقسيمات الإدارية للوجهين القبلي والبحري، وعدد قراهما، وما أصاب هذه القرى من تزايد وتناقص خلال الفترة الممتدة من منتصف القرن الرابع الهجري حتى نهاية السلطنة المملوكية. ثم دراسة عناصر المناخ ومصادر المياه بشكل خاص، والتركيز على أن نهر النيل هو المصدر الوحيد الذي تتفاعل على جوانبه الحياة الاجتماعية-الاقتصادية للشعب المصري، لأن نقص كمية المياه السنوية التي ينقلها هذا النهر تؤدي إلى اضطرابات اجتماعية واقتصادية نظراً لانخفاض مساحة الأراضي المزروعة في تلك السنة، ونقص الحاصلات وازدياد إقبال السكان على تخزين المواد التموينية.
