كانت الحروب الصليبية ولا تزال محور معظم دراسات العصور الوسطى عن منطقة الشرق الأدنى وقد أهتم المعنيون بها من الجانب السياسي والعسكري بين دول المنطقة والعالم الغربي المسيحي بينما لم تنل العلاقات الاقتصادية حظها الكافي من الدراسة والتمحيص ولم يكن اهتمام المؤرخين إلا بشكل عابر وهذا هو موضوع الكتاب وتتميز هذه الفترة بسمة خاصة وهى استعمال الصراع الصليبي الإسلامي مرة أخرى ولكن بصورة مختلفة عن العصور السابقة بعد فتور الحماس الصليبي طوال القرن الرابع عشر الميلادي فقد دخل عنصر جديد في الحرب ولم تعد مصر فقط هى هدفهم بل العالم الإسلامي كله والمتمثل في الدوله العثمانية والتى كانت تراقب بفتوحاتها كل ما كان يدور في العالم الغربي المسيحي وكانت العلاقات بين الدول الإسلامية وبين البندقية وثيقه الرابطة لما بينهما من تعاملات اقتصادية ولمرور تجارة كل منهما في أراضى الأخرى .. وهذا الكتاب يدرس السياسات المختلفة التى اتخذها كل طرف حيال الآخر مع نظرة شاملة للعلاقة بين البندقية ومصر بعد سقوط دولة المماليك الثانية.
