يتألف هذا الكتاب أصلاً من فصول وملاحظات مكتوبة على شكل يوميات ومحاضرات ومناقشات. يقدم من خلالها المؤلف رؤيته الخاصة لمعضلات صنع الفيلم وأهدافه ويوضح مبادئه الخاصة التي توصل إلى إدراكها في العمل، وهو يعبر هنا عن فهمه الخاص للقوانين الأساسية التي تحكم الشكل الفني.
والمؤلف لا يريد من وراء ذلك تعليم الآخرين أو فرض وجهة نظره عليهم، بل غايته الرئيسية أن يجد طريقه عبر متاهة من الإمكانيات والاحتمالات المتضمنة في هذا الشكل الفني.
يتحدث المؤلف عن البداية منذ رحلة الدراسة في معهد السينما وتحقيق فيلم قصير لنيل شهادة دبلوم التخرج والعمل لمدة ثمانية شهور في فيلمه الطويل الأول. ويعرض أيضاً للمعضلات الخاصة بطبيعة الفن السينمائي ويحدد فهمه للهدف الجوهري للفن في حد ذاته إذ يرى أن وظيفة الفن لا تكمن كما يفترض غالباً في ترجمة الأفكار بنجاح أو نشر الفكر أو تقديم العبرة والمثال، بل إن هدف الفن هو تهيئة الفرد للموت، حرث روحه وتمهيدها، وجعلها قادرة على التوجه إلى الخير.
