أصل هذه القصة أحدوثة، جرت على الألسنة في إيطاليا وتداولتها نقلاً عنها سائر الأمم: محصلها أن فتاة ذات مال وافر وجمال باهر وعقل كالكوكب الزاهر، كان قد مات عنها أبواها، فخطبها إلى نفسها ملك مراكش وأمير أراغون في جملة النبهاء ممن خطبها. ولكنها مالت إلى شاب رقيق الحال في مسقط رأسها ومن بني جنسها، استدان المال الذي أنفقه في الزلفى إليها بضمان صديق له فقير مثله، رهن لليهودي الذي أقرض ذلك المال رطلاً من لحم صدره. واستخارت الفتاة الله في مستقبلها، وناطت أمرها بثلاثة صناديق: ذهبي وفضي ورصاصي، جعلت في الأول منها جمجمة ميت، وفي الثاني رأس هزأة أبله، وفي الثالث رسمها، فمن اختار من الخطاب الصندوق الذي فيه رسمها أصبحت له حليلة.
وقد جاء في هذه الحكاية ما يجيء عادة في كل حكاية من أمثالها: أن حبيب الفتاة هو الذي ألهم الصواب، ففرحت به، واحتالت لإنقاذ صديقه من تبعه ضمانه لليهودي، بأن تزينت بذي عالم قانوني، وقضت على المرابي. طالع شكسبير هذه الأسطورة من أساطير السذج في تلك الأيام، فما أجالها إجالة في ذهنه المبتدع حتى بدأ بها فصورها جملة في أحسن ما تتصور حادثة إنسانية شعرية، معطياً إياها من الجدة والندورة ما حيرها من خرافة عامية تقصها العجائز على حفدائها وحفائدها إلى رواية تمثيلية في أسمى الروائع التي جاءت بها قرائح المبدعين في هذا الفن. ثم طفق يهيئ أجزاءها ويرتب مشوقاتها ويصل بالأسباب الفكرية الدقيقة ما بين أوائلها وغاياتها، وههنا يجد المطالع شخصاً يتمثل به كل قصد بحيث لو بحث في الأمس كلهم عن أجمع من هذا الشخص لمقومات الصفة أن يظهره متطعاً بها لما وجد أتم ما هو في تقدير شكسبير.
